چکیده

Using 15N stable isotope as a tracer to quantify N transformation rates in isotope-enrichment experiments improves understanding of the cycle various ecosystems. However, measuring 15N-nitrate (15NO3−) small volumes water for these is major challenge due inconvenience preparing samples by traditional techniques. We developed “REOX/MIMS” method applying membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) determining 15NO3− concentrations from after converting dissolved inorganic N2. The nitrates (NO3− + NO2−) were reduced NH4+ with zinc powder, and ammonium (NH4+) was then oxidized N2 hypobromite iodine solution. resulting 29N2 30N2 measured via MIMS. This optimized protocol provides sensitive (~0.1 μM) precise (relative standard deviation = 0.1–4.37%) approach (0.1–500 µM) over wide range salinities (0–35‰) 2 M KCl solution excellent calibration curves (R2 ≥ 0.9996, p < 0.0001). combined incubation measure gross nitrification NO3− immobilization It rapid, accurate, cost-effective. Future applications this efficient will inform scientists, modelers decision makers about mechanisms, sources, fates, effects delivered or produced numerous aquatic terrestrial

Simultaneous measurement of denitrification and nitrogen fixation using isotope pairing with membrane inlet mass spectrometry analysis.

A method for estimating denitrification and nitrogen fixation simultaneously in coastal sediments was developed. An isotope-pairing technique was applied to dissolved gas measurements with a membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS). The relative fluxes of three N(2) gas species ((28)N(2), (29)N(2), and (30)N(2)) were monitored during incubation experiments after the addition of (15)NO(3)(-). For...

Oil-in-water monitoring using membrane inlet mass spectrometry.

A membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) system has been used for detection and analysis of two types of North Sea crude oil. The system was installed on-field on the Flotta Oil Terminal (Orkney, UK). It consisted of a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) connected to the capillary probe with a silicone-based membrane. The produced mass spectra and calibration plots from the MIMS instrument show...

Detection of nitroxyl (HNO) by membrane inlet mass spectrometry.

Membrane inlet (or introduction) mass spectrometry (MIMS) was used to detect nitroxyl (HNO) in aqueous solution for the first time. The common HNO donors Angeli's salt (AS) and Piloty's acid (PA), along with a newly developed donor, 2-bromo-N-hydroxybenzenesulfonamide (2-bromo-Piloty's acid, 2BrPA), were examined by this technique. MIMS experiments revealed that under physiological conditions 2...

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry for homeland security and forensic applications.

A man-portable membrane inlet mass spectrometer has been built and tested to detect and monitor characteristic odors emitted from the human body and also from threat substances. In each case, a heated membrane sampling probe was used. During human scent monitoring experiments, data were obtained for inorganic gases and volatile organic compounds emitted from human breath and sweat in a confined...

Monitoring of human chemical signatures using membrane inlet mass spectrometry.

This work is an attempt to assist border security crackdown on illegal human immigration, by providing essential results on human chemical signatures. Data was obtained using a portable quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled with a membrane probe for volunteers of both genders and under different conditions in a container simulator. During experiments, participants were asked to follow various pr...
